Glancing out the window, I saw them. Dan was sitting upright, Ruby was swinging her legs on a blue couch. And Molly was kneeling in front of Ruby, holding a stuffed reindeer and smiling warmly.
I stood frozen.
So that was it.
I opened the door, my hands trembling.
Dan looked up.
“Erica”, he said, getting up. “What are you doing? “
“What am I doing here? Who is she? Why does my daughter draw pictures of your “friend” as if she were part of our family? “
So that was it.
Ruby’s eyes widened. “Mom…”
Molly stood up slowly. “I think there’s a misunderstanding”, she said softly.
Dan didn’t intervene.
“I was going to tell you”, he said, his voice breaking. “I swear I was going to do it. “
“You took our daughter to therapy behind my back? “
He nodded. “Yes. And I know. But that’s not what you think. “
“I swear I do. “
